Columbus (population 189,885) is a city in the state of Georgia. It is consolidated with the county of Muscogee and serves as the county seat. It is the principal city of the Columbus, Georgia metropolitan area and is straight across the river from Phenix City, Alabama. It is the 3rd biggest city and fourth biggest metropolitan area in Georgia.

The city of Columbus is roughly 160 south of Atlanta. Fort Benning in Chattahoochee County is situated south of the city. The city of Columbus was name the fourth best city to live within the US by Best Life Magazine. There are numerous interesting sites and museums for visitors. Columbus is accessed by air at the Columbus Airport.

After a site was selected during the year 1828, Columbus was established on the navigable part of the Chattahoochee River. It was located on the Georgia border heading into Alabama. The location was the Creek Indians' home before they were removed during 1836. Columbus was named after Christopher Columbus, the explorer. Dr. Edwin L. DeGraffenried drew up the plan for Columbus and located it on a bluff overlooking the Chattahoochee River. Cotton production was the area's main business.

Columbus was connected to the international cotton market through the Chattahoochee. Textile mills were established to help build up the agricultural sector with industrial production, just after the arrival of the railroad in the mid-19th Century. Columbus's commercial significance increased throughout the rest of the century. By the year 1860, it was considered an essential industrial center, referred to as "the Lowell of the South," in reference to a northern industrial township within the state of Massachusetts.

Columbus is now home to a variety of prominent industries, expanding their economy past the production of textiles. The businesses TSYS, Aflac, Synovus and Carmike Cinemas have their head office here. Columbus College grew from a two-year institution into the highly regarded Columbus State University. In 1971, the city of Columbus became the very first city in the state to consolidate county and city governments.
