JSHS recognizes outstanding research presented by high school students at Regional and National Symposia. The U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force jointly sponsor undergraduate tuition scholarships and cash awards for student finalists who are citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) of the United States, at the Regional and National Symposia.
Teachers are also recognized for their exceptional contributions to promoting student research.
Many organizations who host Regional Competitions present university-specific scholarships, university-sponsored cash awards, and other prizes. The availability of these additional awards, type of award, and value vary by region.
The following undergraduate tuition scholarship and cash awards are supported by the Department of Defense sponsors. All scholarships are payable upon matriculation to college and upon meeting the JSHS scholarship conditions.
Scholarship Eligibility and Rules
The U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force support the outstanding achievements of students in STEM research through undergraduate tuition scholarships. JSHS Regional and National student researchers qualify for JSHS scholarships as a result of STEM research paper competitions hosted at regional and national levels.
Qualifying students must be a citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) of the United States and be enrolled full-time in an accredited institution. Scholarship funds may be used to cover tuition and tuition-related materials, such as, but not limited to, summer tuition, books, supplies, laboratory fees, and related materials. Scholarship funds are not authorized for the purchase of personal computers or software. All scholarship payments are made directly to the student’s college of enrollment.
JSHS scholarship recipients who attend service academies receive full tuition through the U.S. Government. Therefore, the JSHS scholarship is not available to support tuition costs. Other legitimate expenses may be supported through the JSHS scholarship. Students who attend service academies should submit a written request to the JSHS National Office at the National Science Teaching Association that details these legitimate expenses.
