Strong Arm Leukemia Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $1,000

Awards Available: 1

Award Deadline: Oct 15, 2025

Here at John Foy & Associates, we are known as the “Strong Arm of Georgia”. We are a tough Atlanta Personal Injury law firm that will fight to the finish for our clients. But our associates know that not every battle is fought in the courtroom. Fighting a disease requires more than a legal “Strong Arm”-it requires a dedicated team of medical staff, loved ones, and countless more. Fighting leukemia requires determination, drive, and diligence in both the patient and the patient’s loved ones. Often, the battle is a solitary one, isolating the patient and family. Our firm associates recognize this. That’s why we are delighted to offer the annual John Foy & Associates “Strong Arm” Leukemia Scholarship.

Our $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one undergraduate or graduate student who has battled leukemia or whose life has been affected by it. “We are honored to be a part of this brave community,” said firm founder John M. Foy. “We started this scholarship to raise awareness of the issues that face leukemia patients and their family members.” Leukemia is the most common cancer in children and teens, and it’s one of the most diagnosed in adults.

A phenomenal amount of medical research has been successful in raising the survival rate in children from 10% in the 1970s to more than 80% today. If you or someone you love has been affected by this disease, you have already been in the fight of your life. Now you have a chance to attend college and move in a positive direction, by educating yourself to secure a brighter future. As attorneys, we appreciate the intrinsic value of a college, not just as a formal education but also as a way to advance your life. Let us help you help yourself.

The John Foy & Associates “Strong Arm” Leukemia Scholarship is open to high-achieving college students who meet these criteria:

  • You or a loved one have been affected by leukemia.
  • You are enrolled in an accredited college university, or graduate school as an undergraduate student or graduate student, or you are an incoming freshman at an accredited institution in the United States.

To apply, you must either complete a 2-3 minute video OR write a 500 to 1000-word essay on one of the three topics listed below and submit an official high school or college transcript. You may only apply online at this website. Our attorneys will determine a selection committee to choose the winner and the winner will be announced publicly through the media and featured on our website. It is our hope that our scholarship program will inspire young people who have been affected by this very common type of cancer to lead inspired lives.

Application Topics:

Create a 2-3 minute video or write a 500 to 1,000-word essay on one of these three topic questions:

  • How has living with your or your loved one’s leukemia affected your education?
  • What adjustments have you made as a student to accommodate your or a loved one’s leukemia?
  • What one obstacle do people with leukemia face that you would like the general public to know about?

Include a paragraph statement on how this scholarship would benefit you. This paragraph will not count toward the word count of the essay, or to the length of the video respectively.

For the videos to be considered eligible, students are required to:

  • Record their videos in well-lit areas while holding their recording device of choice as still as possible.
  • Mention their full name and the name of the scholarship they are applying for either at the beginning or at the end of their video and give credits as necessary.
  • Specify any sources of information and the media editing tools used in crafting and creating their videos in the description of the video.
  • Use only copyright-free content, and come up with a creative, catchy title that reflects their ideas.

Students are free to use media editing tools, to include images, stock shots, effects, or clean cuts in their content, but they are not compulsory. The firm intends to award this scholarship based on the quality of a video’s script and not a student’s demonstrable video editing skills. Therefore, students should take time and care crafting the speech for their videos before sitting down to record them.

While students can use AI to generate B-roll footage, the text/story that they share should be read in their own voices. Any usage of AI platforms to automatically generate videos, and the use of fake actors without appearing in their own video is strictly prohibited and will lead to automatic disqualification.

Upon scripting, shooting, and editing your video, you should post it as an unlisted video on YouTube, and submit a link to the video through the form available on this page.

For your essay to be eligible please include the following:

  • A header where you mention your full name; the name of the scholarship; the name of the institution you are enrolled in; the mailing address from your financial aid office where we can mail the award; the e-mail address and phone number from your financial aid office; the student ID number.
  • A catchy and original title.
  • A bibliography where you mention all the sources of information used (eg: books, sites; articles, magazines, reports, etc.)
