Offers financial support for island students interested in expanding their educational horizons through off-island enrichment and travel programs, including summer camp, semester study abroad, and gap year programs.

Students are eligible for up to 4 Geiger Scholarships: once in grades 6-8, once in grades 9-12, once in college and once for a gap year.

ELIGIBILITY

Must meet one or more of the following requirements:

  • Middle school through college students living on one of Maine’s year-round, unbridged islands
  • Currently enrolled in or graduated from the highest grade level available at your island school
  • Magnet student with a demonstrated commitment to their island school and enrolled in at least their second year or have plans to return for a second year

DEADLINES: November 30th and February 28th of each year.

UPON COMPLETION

Within 30 days of completing their program, scholarship recipients must submit a written reflection about their experience and up to 5 photos, including at least one with them in it.

AWARD AMOUNT

Up to $10,000 for semester programs and up to $5,000 for summer programs. Award amounts are determined by application quality (based on a scoring rubric) and number of applicants. Recipients must travel within a year of receiving their scholarship.

Yale Young Global Scholars Program: Due to the generosity of the donor, we are able to fully fund (tuition and program deposit) one student per summer to attend the Yale Young Global Scholars Program. Student must apply and be accepted into the program. More information can be found at globalscholars.yale.edu.

Exceptions and special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
