To recognize those high school seniors who have consistently demonstrated excellence in both the spoken and written word and plan to pursue college and a career that requires excellence in communication.

Number and Size of Awards

Number of recipients and award amounts vary; award amount may be split between two or more recipients. Award paid in one lump sum in the Fall and divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters. Average award $5,000; not to exceed the cost of tuition.

Allowed Use of Award

Awards may be used for tuition, fees, books, and other expenses associated with higher education.

Eligibility Criteria

For graduating high school seniors or current college undergraduate students in Monroe County who:

  • Have consistently demonstrated excellence in both the spoken and written word with an “A-” or 90% average in English.
  • Have maintained at least a “B” or 85% average in general courses.
  • Are currently attending or planning to attend a two- or four- year college or university.
  • Are focused on a career that requires excellence in communication.
  • Demonstrate financial need.

Committee/Selection Process

The selection process is coordinated through the Community Foundation. A committee comprised of Community Foundation staff, community members, and family representatives reviews applications and selects the recipient(s).

Award Announcement and Payment

The Community Foundation emails an award notification with instructions for claiming the award to the recipient in April. Payment is mailed to the school for the recipient’s account in one lump sum in the Fall and split between the Fall and Spring semesters once required documentation is received.

To release the scholarship payment, upload the requested and required information including your class schedule and tuition bill verifying full-time enrollment at a two- or four- year college or university to the Community Foundation’s online Consolidated Scholarship Application between July 1 and August 15.

Scholarships not claimed by February 15 in the assigned year will be forfeited.

Renewability

This scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable; however, students may apply in future years. Current and prior recipients applying in future years must demonstrate a minimum 3.0 GPA in college.
