                    The Jim McKay Graduate Scholarship honors the legacy of legendary sports broadcaster Jim McKay by supporting student-athletes who exemplify his commitment to leadership, integrity and the pursuit of excellence in sports communications. Each year, the NCAA awards this prestigious scholarship to one female and one male student-athlete who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, meaningful involvement in athletics and a clear passion for a career in sports communication or media.
Who's Eligible
- Be a graduating senior at an NCAA member institution
- Have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 (4.0 scale)
- Have competed in intercollegiate athletics at the varsity level
- Intend to pursue a graduate degree in sports communication, journalism, media studies, or a related field
- Demonstrate leadership, integrity, and service both on campus and in the community
How to Apply
Student-athletes are nominated by their institution's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) or a designated administrator.
Nomination packet must include:
- Completed nomination form
- Official undergraduate transcripts
- Personal statement outlining the applicant's goals in sports communication and how they embody Jim McKay's legacy
- At least one letter of recommendation highlighting academic, athletic, and personal achievements
Selection Details
Recipients are selected by an NCAA committee based on the following:
- Academic Achievement  Demonstrated excellence in the classroom
- Athletics Participation  Contributions and commitment as a student-athlete
- Leadership & Character  Integrity, service and positive impact on others
- Career Intentions  Strong interest in sports communication or a related field
Award Details
- One male and one female student-athlete are selected annually
- Each recipient receives a $10,000 scholarship toward graduate study
- The award is nonrenewable and must be used toward enrollment in an accredited graduate program

- Nominations open: Sept. 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. EST
- Nominations close: Jan. 5, 2026, at 5 p.m. EST
- Finalists notified: Early March
- Virtual interviews: March 13, 2026
